SILVA RATTLED BY POOR CALLS

-

MARCO SILVA bemoaned Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s offside goal that helped condemn Everton to defeat. The visitors had the better of the first 50 minutes but a quick-fire double from Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang gave Arsenal the victory. Aubameyang received the ball in an offside position from Aaron Ramsey’s flick, but assistant referee Harry Lennard failed to raise his flag. Silva said: ‘It’s really frustrating. We have just one player, Jonjoe Kenny, inside the box. It’s clear where he is in that moment and it’s clear on the second touch (by Ramsey) where the Arsenal player who finishes is as well. He’s clearly offside. ‘For me, it’s a little bit strange. But it’s OK. I make mistakes… my players do too. The assistant referees can make them as well. ‘We were in control of the game in that moment. They scored a great goal (from Lacazette). We would’ve tried to fight to make it 1-1, for sure. The second goal was really hard for us.’ Silva hopes VAR will be implemented in the Premier League next season. ‘The people in command have to take the decision. If they didn’t take it before, it’s because it wasn’t the best moment to do it. They’re trying to find the best way to do that in the future. Maybe next season.’ The momentum swung in Arsenal’s favour thanks to Lacazette’s strike. Manager Unai Emery had prepared a substitution before the goal and he later seemed to confirm that the France striker was going to be taken off. ‘We needed change in this moment on the pitch. Another individual quality,’ he said. Asked whether it was Lacazette who would have been hooked, he laughed and nodded. Emery also praised Petr Cech, who made a series of important saves. ‘The performance was what we wanted,’ he said of his goalkeeper. Cech added: ‘I’m delighted with the performance and the clean sheet. I had a lot to do today.’ Sky’s Jamie Carragher later insisted that Arsenal won’t make the top four. ‘On the evidence of what we have seen, the others look a bit further up,’ he said.
