How ‘manly’ builders can cement marriages that last
THEY may be more used to lifting bricks than romantic bouquets.
When it comes to being a faithful husband, however, builders could be just what women are looking for.
A study has found that men are less likely to stray if they work in ‘manly’ industries dominated by their own sex.
Workers in construction – where 92 per cent of employees are men – have a 3 per cent lower risk of divorce compared to industries where numbers are equally balanced between males and females.
Men who work in healthcare – where more than 90 per cent of staff are women – have a 6 per cent higher risk of divorce. The Stockholm University team based their findings on marriages in Denmark between 1981 and 2002. They said there was a high divorce risk – for both sexes – in the hotel and restaurant sector and low risks in the library and farming sectors’.
Writing in a Royal Society journal, they said: ‘Across human societies... when women are scarce, long-term pair-bonds are more likely to be formed and relationships are more stable.’
