YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some from our article about holidaymakers forced to wait up to a year for flight delay compensation . . .

OUR airline tried every trick in the book with us, including simply not replying to our emails. The whole process took nearly a year. It wasn’t until we got in touch with the Civil Aviation Authority that we received our cheque in the post a week later. N. L., Leeds.

WE HAD a 24-hour delay on a flight from Barbados last year. The overnight stay was chaotic and the airline provided very little information to passengers. However, once I put in the claim online, the money was paid into my account within days. P. C., South Lanarkshire.

I SYMPATHISE with the airlines. It doesn’t seem right that people can receive €400 for a delay when the original flight ticket was just £35. However, as it is EU law, there should be additional penalties if compensation isn’t paid within a reasonable timeframe. S. T., London.

A FLIGHT delay can have an enormous effect on your holiday. You can miss transfer flights and hire car firms may not hold the booking. If you have a long transfer from the airport to the hotel, you may even have to stay elsewhere on your first night. R. M., Dorset.

PEOPLE are too entitled today. If you’re delayed for more than three hours, there’s no need to be too dramatic. Why not grab a bite to eat and get on with it? All these claims will do is prompt airlines to push up ticket prices. P. T., Hampshire.

WE HAD all but given up on getting our money back, then we appointed a claims management company. We ended up getting €800 for an 11-hour delay with Thomson [now TUI]. The claims firm took €400, but we weren’t getting anywhere on our own. S. H., Newcastle.
