5. LYSEFJORD

-

How it’s done: Nothing will prepare you for the spectacular beauty of the Lysefjord, one of Mother Nature’s most dramatic showstoppers. Dating back to the Ice Age, over 10,000 years ago, this fjord is surrounded by mountains and cliff faces. Take in a big gulp of fresh Norwegian air as you cruise through the shallowest points of the glassy fjord on your journey through the glaciers on your smaller Fred. Olsen cruise ship, perfect for gaining rare access to these stunning waterways as you pass through the restricted 50-metre bridge.

You can take in the sights and listen out for the gunshot sound of the Kjeragsmellet – an unexplained phenomenon – or marvel at this highest of the cliffs, 740 metres above sea level.

As part of the cruise to this dream-like destination, you will stop off in historic Bergen, where you can amble through the quaint streets, meander around a museum or try one of the local delicacies.

Norwegian Fjords and Cities, M1912, from £999pp, departing from Southampton, May 18, 2019
