Student vet is found hanged hours after taking cocaine

- By Liz Hull

A STUDENT vet who was found hanged hours after taking cocaine had sent a final cryptic text message, an inquest heard yesterday.

horse lover hannah Daibell, 21, sent the message saying: ‘Whatever you come home to, you did this.’

her family said they had not noticed any signs of her wanting to take her own life.

But the exact meaning of the text remained unclear, the hearing was told, while the recipient was also not disclosed.

Miss Daibell, who was studying veterinary science at Liverpool University, was found dead at her student accommodation in the city in July.

a former president of the university’s Riding and Polo Club, she had a close relationship with her family and had done nothing in the weeks or months prior to her death to suggest she was suicidal.

Coroner’s officer Nicola Griffiths told the inquest in Liverpool that toxicology tests confirmed Miss Daibell, originally from Bury , had taken cocaine ‘at some point prior to her death’.

It is likely she would have expe - rienced ‘come-down’ effects, such as low mood, depression and anxiety, which could have affected her mental state, the court heard.

Coroner andre Rebello said: ‘The texting could mean anything. It would be wrong for me to speculate. The metabolite [cocaine]... it may well be that has affected her. Without having taken that she might never have been put in that position.’

he said the student ’ s death would have been ‘exceptionally rapid’ and could have been a ‘cry for help’ that went wrong.

Recording an open verdict, he said: ‘It’s not a cop -out. The text may have been alerting someone that she wanted them to come and find her. I know how special she was to her family.’

The cause of death was recorded as compression of the neck as a result of hanging.

Following her death, other stu - dents expressed their sorrow over the tragedy.

on the Liverpool University Fencing Club F acebook page, Lydia sida P age wrote: ‘ after hearing the devastating news about the death of hannah Daibell, last year’s president of the riding and polo team, I just wanted to say that if anyone is ever feeling isolated or down please don’t suffer in silence.

‘We are a team and a family, and I know anyone of us would reach out and help someone in need.’

Miss Daibell’s parents declined to comment after the hearing.
