Uber fined in data breach
SCANDAL-HIT taxi firm Uber is shelling out a record £112m after admitting it covered up a hack which saw 57m passengers and drivers’ details compromised.
It is the biggest-ever fine for a data breach and covers allegations of wrongdoing in all 50 US states. Around 2.7m accounts were in the UK. Uber paid hackers £75,000 to keep them quiet instead of coming clean and warning people were at risk.
The attack took place in 2016 but the firm only owned up to consumers and regulators last November. It is one of a string of crises to hit the online cab hire firm, which had to oust founder Travis Kalanick last year.
