BJORN HAS BELIEF IN HIS UNDERDOGS

- MIKE DICKSON

EUROPEAN captain Thomas Bjorn believes this could be the greatest Ryder Cup ever, with an unprecedented level of talent on both teams. On the eve of the tournament, the Dane said: ‘These are the best teams, world-ranking-wise, who have ever faced each other in this event. ‘It’s all lined up to be something special, so it’s for those 24 players to go out and show that. ‘The surroundings, the golf course, the stands, the build-up in this great city — it adds up for it to be a really special occasion. ‘Are we underdogs? Probably, but we still believe we can win.’ Bjorn’s American counterpart Jim Furyk insisted that there would be no complacency from the powerhouse group he has assembled. ‘They are feisty and confident and they are trying to do the best they can to brace themselves,’ he said. ‘They have spoken a lot and are well aware of the history of this event. They love it every bit as much as I do, so there’s no worry at my end of any overconfidence. No one is putting the cart before the horse here and we will embrace the challenge.’
