A diamond in the ruff, Gaga the film star is born

- Daily Mail Reporter

SHE might look like Elizabeth I after an unlikely wild night out. But this was Lady Gaga yesterday evening, paying ‘a tribute to London fashion’.

The US pop singer made a showstopping appearance in the capital for the premiere of her film A Star Is Born.

Her white gown featured a gold corseted bodice with a cutout to showcase her cleavage, large ruffled sleeves and a harlequin print floor-length skirt.

Explaining the inspiration behind her choice of the Alexander McQueen gown, she said: ‘I wanted to pay tribute to him and to London fashion.’

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, stars in the film with American actor Bradley Cooper, who also directs.

The movie is a remake of the 1 76 version starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, which itself was a remake of the 1 54 Judy Garland film – based on the black and white 1 37 original starring Janet Gaynor. This is the first lead role in a Hollywood film for Gaga, 32, who has won six Grammy awards for her music.

But there is already talk that she could win an Oscar nomination for her performance, as did Streisand and Garland.

Streisand, 76, told Billboard in the US yesterday: ‘I haven’t seen the full cut, but it’s very good.’

A Star Is Born tells the story of how musician Jackson Maine (Cooper) discovers and falls in love with singer Ally (Gaga). As she finds fame with her vocal talents, their relationship begins to break down as Jackson fights an ongoing battle with his internal demons.

It opens on October 5 in the UK.
