Aldi’s cooked meat packaging goes green

-

ALDI is replacing the plastic packaging on its cooked meat products to make it recyclable.

The original plastic contained PVC so it could not be recycled, whereas the new one contains 100 per cent recyclable APET/PE.

The move should prevent 1,059 tonnes of the retailer’s plastic packaging from being buried in landfill or burned for energy.

Fritz Walleczek, from the retail giant, said: ‘Our customers consistently tell us they want to see a reduction in plastic waste and we are committed to helping them achieve that by ensuring all our own-label packaging can be reused, recycled or composted by 2022.

‘We have been reviewing all our products to help us achieve that and this is just the latest in a string of initiatives that will help us reach that target.’ The chain has already replaced black plastic trays with clear, recyclable versions on six of its fruit and vegetable lines.
