THEATRE legends Patti LuPone and Stephen Sondheim,

above, were holding forth in the Gielgud Theatre’s stalls bar following the exciting first preview of a reimagined Company.

The landmark musical about sex and friendship in New York City, by Sondheim and George Furth, has had a sex change. The lead part of Bobby is now Bobbie; and she’s played by Rosalie Craig.

Other parts originally played by women are now taken by men, while LuPone plays one of the original ladies who lunch. The show comes from the award-winning team of director Marianne Elliott and producer Chris Harper.

Sondheim and Elliott have a lot of finessing to do before the official opening on October 16. In the rush to get the show on, one number (Tick Tock) was omitted. It’s going in from tomorrow.
