Andy blasts back to form

- MATTHEW LAMBERT

ANDY MURRAY scored the best win since his comeback from surgery, taking out first seed and world No 11 David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-final of the Shenzhen Open. The 31-year-old Scot looked more like the man who racked up three Grand Slams than the hobbling figure plagued by injury of more recent times. This was the Scot’s biggest win by ranking since he beat Kei Nishikori in last year’s French Open. Goffin, 27, had not beaten Murray in five attempts yet this felt like a chance for the classy Belgian. But Murray struck his backhand with authority and served 13 aces, including three in a row to polish off the match. Goffin did come in a little cold, arriving in China late from the Laver Cup in Chicago. Murray today plays the man who knocked him out of the US Open, Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
