JAMIE VARDY

THE Leicester striker was back to doing what he does best as he ran Huddersfield ragged in his team’s 3-1 win. So, it is hard to understand why he has already called time on his England career. Vardy is only 31 and it’s to be hoped he doesn’t regret his decision when England are playing what is largely a home Euro 2020 campaign in two summers’ time.

ZAK HARDAKER

THE England rugby league full back was given a chance to resurrect his career by Wigan after a positive test for cocaine ended his time at Castleford. Hardaker is not due to play again this season, but has now been charged with drink-driving after being stopped without insurance and MOT in his native Yorkshire. Wigan may well be within their rights to sack him and if that’s the case they should do it. Some things matter more than results on the field.

LAURA DAVIES

DAVIES (right) has won most of what there is to win in golf but has never played in the Ryder Cup, so she needed to bring more than dull observations and platitudes to her opening spell of co-commentary for Sky in Paris. Only Thorbjorn Olesen began the day as badly.
