DINO’S GETTING A MONSTER SEASON OUT OF UNFANCIED STEVENAGE

- TOM FARMERY

HERO OF THE WEEK

DINO MAAMRIA (Stevenage boss): Few expected Stevenage to be anywhere near the top of the table this season, but they are up to fourth after winning at Carlisle. Maamria, who was appointed in March, has got his team playing a system they understand, and they are also among the fittest squads in the league after an intense pre-season.

ZERO OF THE WEEK

MICHAEL JOLLEY (Grimsby manager): Stevenage may have a ‘system’, Jolley’s Grimsby surely do not. Jolley drilled a 3-5-2 formation in the summer, only for it to fail on the opening day against Forest Green. It hasn’t looked like working since. A 2-1 home defeat by Morecambe on Saturday was their sixth straight defeat — the worst run in the top four tiers of English football, and the Mariners slipped to 23rd in the table.

GOAL OF THE WEEK

ASHLEY NATHANIEL-GEORGE (for Crawley v Yeovil): Nathaniel-George put Crawley back into the lead in the 3-1 win over Yeovil. The midfielder took on Jake Gray as he moved inside, before rifling a long-range, right-foot effort into the bottom corner.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

PAUL TISDALE (MK Dons manager): ‘It doesn’t take an Einstein to work out where we need to improve — taking our chances and making more of our territory,’ said Tisdale after MK Dons failed to win for a fifth game. ‘I don’t want to get into too much detail here because that takes away from my players. I do think we are making progress, but we could do with turning some of these into three points.’

STAT OF THE WEEK

ONE — Notts County finally got their first win of the season. The 2-1 home victory over Crewe lifted them out of the bottom two.
