- By RIATH AL-SAMARRAI and MATT LAWTON

UK ATHLETICS and UK Sport are in talks over a double bid to host the European Championships in 2026 and the World Championships in 2027. The plans, which have Government backing, are expected to be included on a list of hosting targets unveiled by UK Sport in London today, with the most prominent being the 2030 FIFa World Cup. athletics’ governing body, the IaaF, are keen to bring the sport back to Britain, having seen attendance records smashed when their World Championships were held in London last year. The ambitious plans come despite a crisis at UK athletics, whose chairman Richard Bowker was yesterday given a stay of execution by representatives of the UKa members council who want him out over his plans to streamline British athletics. The members council had given the UKa board until 5pm yesterday to act but Bowker has now been given until the end of the week to resolve the dispute or face being served with 28 days’ notice to have him removed.
