It’s no fiction, Tarantino’s in the dictionary

MOVIE slang phrases such as ‘Tarantino-esque’ and ‘Spielbergian’ have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The words, named after the directors of violent hitman film Pulp Fiction and blockbuster Jurassic Park respectively, have made their way into ‘ mainstream consciousness’, say the editors of this year’s edition.

Other new words include ‘Kubrickian’, after A Clockwork Orange director Stanley Kubrick, and ‘J Horror’, referring to Japanese horror films.

Craig Leyland, senior editor of the dictionary, said: ‘As with any area of specialism, film has its ever-expanding lexicon.’

The new list of 1,400 words also includes millennial slang such as ‘fam’, meaning family or friend. Fam was first seen as a graphic abbreviation in the 16th century, but has become linked to hip-hop music.

Fashion is also referenced with ‘lumbersexual’ – men who live in urban areas but dress like lumberjacks with a beard and checked shirt.
