CALL-UP IS GREAT BUT WILL ROSS PLAY ENOUGH FOR HIS CLUB?

- PETER CROUCH

ROSS BARKLEY is back in the England squad and I am delighted to see him included. He has been a long time out of the national picture and we need players of his talent to thrive. I have been a fan of his for a long time and whenever I’ve watched him I’ve always thought he has so much ability. He had a serious injury last season but in the games I have seen him play for Chelsea it has looked as if he’s never been away. I do, though, have a concern about him for the future. If he was still an Everton player, there is no doubt he would be starting every Premier League game. Will he really get that opportunity at Chelsea or will he have to accept a role around the edges of the team? The way England play now, Barkley would really suit one of those three central midfield positions but I’m slightly concerned he is going to end up like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ethan Ampadu — two other Chelsea midfielders I’ve spoken about who struggle for serious game time. Barkley has done well to force his way back into the England picture. I hope this proves to be the start of something permanent for him and I hope he really fulfils his potential under Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea. It would be such a waste if it turns out any other way.
