CLOUGH LEFT BEMUSED BY BURTON WOE

LEAGUE ONE THIS WEEKEND

- TOM FARMERY

HERO OF THE WEEK

NATHAN JONES (Luton manager): If Luton are to have a chance of recording back-to-back promotions, they need to beat their division rivals. Scunthorpe have similar ambitions of making it to the Championship. So, when the sides met at Kenilworth Road, Luton boss Jones knew what a win would represent. After being pegged back at 1-1, Luton took the lead again before James Justin, 19, added a third in the 85th minute. Scunthorpe’s Steven Humphrys scored a consolation but Luton held on for a second straight win. They are now only two points off the play-offs.

ZERO OF THE WEEK

NIGEL CLOUGH (Burton manager): When Burton lost their first two games of the season it was put down to teething problems. The expectation was that they would soon adapt to League One and establish themselves high up the table. Nine games later and Nigel Clough’s side are 18th in the table. A 2-1 defeat at Wycombe meant they have suffered back-to-back losses. Wycombe hadn’t won at home all season before Burton’s visit. Clough (above) admitted that his side ‘gave’ them two goals and that tells you all you need to know about the situation.

GOAL OF THE WEEK

TOM EAVES (for Gillingham v Portsmouth): One of the best goals of the weekend in English football. Eaves lifted the ball over the head of Portsmouth defender Gareth Evans, swivelled to get past him, and connected with a sweet leftfoot volley that soared over the head of goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray into the roof of the net.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

JOEY BARTON: The Fleetwood manager couldn’t help but have a little bit of a joke at Doncaster Rovers’ expense after his side demolished them 4-0 at the Keepmoat.

‘You’ve got to go and keep the back door closed,’ he said. ‘I have said on numerous occasions, if we play at that level and work for each other, we will get results. The lads put in a ruthless performance.’

STAT OF THE WEEK

200: Adebayo Akinfenwa scored his 200th goal in English football in Wycombe’s 2- 1 win over Burton. The other goalscorer, Joe Jacobson, was also making his 200th appearance for the club.
