School’s new uniform ... hoodies and tracksuits!

- By Andy Dolan

A PRIMARY school wants to ditch its traditional uniform in favour of tracksuits and hoodies.

The headmaster says the proposals will save parents money and save on lesson time, as pupils will no longer have to change for PE.

But parents fear the policy could lower standards, with some saying it will make their children look like the ‘next generation of drug dealers’.

Richard Siviter wrote to parents last week with the proposals, which are backed by governors at Telford Junior School in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

He said the new uniform, in school colours with its logo, would include a T-shirt or sports top, tracksuit bottoms, hoodie, sports socks and trainers, adding: ‘The aim is to make it more suitable for the active curriculum we are keen to develop.’

But mother-of-two Michelle Jackson, 43, criticised the idea, saying: ‘Unless we’re preparing the next generation to be PE teachers or drug dealers I think a traditional uniform is best.’

Another parent said: ‘Hoodies? What’s next on the curriculum? Lessons on loitering followed by double shoplifting?’

Telford Junior, which has 351 pupils aged seven to 11, is rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.
