Vegan sandwiches put Greggs on a roll

-

GREGGS shrugged off the heatwave to post a jump in profits – boosted by rising sales of Fairtrade coffee, focaccia-style pizza and awardwinning vegan sandwiches.

The High Street baker said sales at shops that have been open more than a year were up 3.2pc in the 13 weeks to September 29. The company, which sells sandwiches, pies, sausage rolls and pastries from more than 1,900 outlets across the UK, said total sales rose 7.3pc as it opened more shops. Shares rose 4.6pc, or 46p, to 1052p.

In a mark of how Greggs has transformed itself in recent years, its Mexican bean wrap was crowned best vegan sandwich at Peta’s 2018 Vegan Food Awards. Total sales for the year-todate are up 5.9pc.

Emma-Lou Montgomery, associate director at Fidelity Personal Investing, said: ‘Just ten years ago, if someone had suggested Greggs would one day win an award for the best vegan sandwich you’d have choked on your sausage roll.’
