HOW TO START A COSMETIC COLLECTION

-

MAKING an investment? Look for iconic brands that sum up the spirit of an age. Pieces that embody a trend are likely to be the most sought after in future.

INVEST in the original magazine adverts for your item (available on eBay) or print them from the internet.

REMEMBER, it’s not all about money — collect things you genuinely love.

MODERN-DAY classics will be worth something one day, such as an item from Rihanna’s first Fenty Beauty collection.

LOOK for revolutionary product design, such as the first ‘twist up’ lipsticks.

FIND items which look ‘of their era’, such as Seventies Avon products.

I MAINLY use sites such as eBay, Etsy and 1stdibs. But if I’m in a new place, I pop into bric-a-brac and antique shops. There are also websites specialising in estate sales in the U.S. — anything with celebrity connections is a good investment.

BUY items in great condition. Unused and in its box is the dream. But there are exceptions, such as if it’s an iconic piece or has a lovely story. I have false lashes from the Thirties with the original glue. They are moulded to the shape of the owner’s eyes, and I like to imagine the woman who loved them so much.

DON’T use the old make-up as it lowers its value and may give you a rash!

ITEMISE your objects, record information such as the first owner and country of origin, keep them in a cool, dark place and wear gloves when handling them.
