SKIPPER KANE DESPERATE TO PLAY, NOT REST

- By SAMI MOKBEL

HARRY KANE is prepared to play in England’s UEFA Nations League clashes against Croatia and Spain despite burn-out fears. England manager Gareth Southgate pulled his captain out of training on Tuesday to lighten the striker’s workload. But Sportsmail understands Kane wants to play against Croatia in Rijeka tomorrow and Spain in Seville three days later so it is down to Southgate to decide whether he feels the Tottenham striker needs a break. Last month Southgate started Kane in the loss to Spain before putting him on the bench for the friendly against Switzerland. He could do the same this time to ensure the player is not susceptible to injury. Kane captained England to a fourth-place finish at the World Cup and did not arrive back from Russia until July 15. He then cut his summer holiday short to make himself available for Tottenham’s season-opener against Newcastle 27 days later. The 25-year-old has had just one full summer off since 2015 but unless he is suffering from a serious injury, he prides himself on being available for every game. Meanwhile, Southgate is keen on giving Kane’s Tottenham team-mate Harry Winks some game time in the next two matches after recalling him to the squad last week. Southgate was hugely impressed by Winks’ debut against Lithuania a year ago and has brought him back at the earliest opportunity after injury halted his progress last season, which shows how highly he rates the midfielder.
