SOPHIE PACINI: In Between (Warner 9029570494)
WHAT a wonderful sound Sophie Pacini conjures from a Steinway Model D grand piano. I have not enjoyed a mixed recital so much for years. What makes it all the better is that the young German-Italian has chosen a captivating linked programme. Starting with Liszt’s transcription of Schumann’s song Widmung (Dedication), she goes on to music by Clara and Robert Schumann, Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny. The centrepiece is a magnificent account of the eight pieces that make up Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestucke, in which Pacini often creates great waves of sonority. She can play very delicately, as well, witness her performances of five Mendelssohn Songs Without Words, Fanny Hensel’s Lied and Clara Schumann’s fine Scherzo. ★★★★★ TULLY POTTER
