QUIRKY NEW DRAMA The Romanoffs, Amazon Prime

GLOBE-TROTTING new eight-part drama about people who believe themselves descendant­s of Russian royalty. It comes from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and features different characters each week, some played by familiar faces from that show. This opening double bill stars Aaron Eckhart and Noah Wyle. A new episode arrives every Friday.

FANTASY SAGA A Discovery Of Witches, 9pm, Sky One

LINDSAY DUNCAN’S vampire mum munches on a fox in tonight’s new episode, as a way of putting Diana — the breathy witch, much less the academic than she is in the books — off her son. But will seeing vampires red in tooth and claw disgust Diana or simply encourage her?

HARLEM CONCERT Living On Soul, 10pm, Sky Arts

THERE are some great characters in this new film about the on and offstage action at a 2014 soul concert in New York’s Y Harlem, chief among them Sharon Jones. The legendary singer s — who talks about a being cancer-free here, but sadly died from it in 2016 — is one of o those performing.

HIT SKITS My Favourite Sketch, 10pm, Gold

SKETCHES from Russ Abbot and Hale and Pace anchor Jason Manford’s choices, which also include the subversive work of the Americans Key and Peele. Six years after the 2012 sketch Manford picks here — about a slave auction — Jordan Peele won an Oscar for writing Get Out.

SCARY TALE The Haunting Of Hill House, Netflix

NETFLIX’S new modern horror story might be one to save for Halloween. It’s the confident, well-acted and seriously creepy tale of the hold a haunted house exerts on a family (headed by a tortured dad played by Timothy Hutton) long, long after they have left. That creepiness is enhanced by a deft use of sound, especially the many long and uncomforta­ble silences.
