LADY LUCK SMILES ON MILLWALL
FOR an hour here, Millwall looked destined to suffer the kind of rotten luck that befalls many a team near the foot of the table. Having seen Wigan take the lead through the flukiest of own goals, Millwall conceded a penalty that was a generous award, to say the least. But it was at that point that Lady Luck threw them a lifeline. Josh Windass blazed the spot-kick into the stands and this match shifted completely on its axis. Barely two minutes later, the hosts were level through a penalty of their own, converted by Shaun Williams. And with eight minutes left, substitute Steve Morison earned Millwall three points to lift them out of the Championship drop zone and, they hope, provide a turning point in their disappointing season. ‘We’ve had horrendous luck but we’ve now got seven points from four games, which is a huge return,’ said manager Neil Harris. ‘We went from down in the dumps at half-time to flying high.’ Wigan boss Paul Cook said: ‘The 90 minutes can be summed up in a minute. If we had gone 2-0 up it would have been unjust on them.’ Jed Wallace was the unlucky one when Lee Evans’ free-kick struck him and ricocheted past Ben Amos into the bottom corner on the stroke of half-time. And it didn’t seem their night when Mahlon Romeo was somehow ruled to have fouled James Vaughan. However, Windass lost his nerve and a minute later, Reece James hauled Aiden O’Brien over and Shaun Williams showed Windass how to strike a penalty. And Morison tapped in Shane Ferguson’s cross to round off a nice Millwall move.
