It’s women who made Green his billions — and they could now bring him down

- Amanda.platell@dailymail.co.uk

SUCH a supreme irony. Philip Green, the man who made his billions and his name out of women, selling them clothes from his vast retail empire, now faces being brought down . . . by women.

not just through the testimonies of employees who claim they were assaulted, humiliated, reduced to tears by him. But also because the millions of impressionable young fashion addicts — the #MeToo generation — who flocked to outlets like Topshop are now likely to regard him very differently.

They will feel sullied stepping inside a store owned by a man accused of being a bully, racist and sexual predator.

and what of those style icons such as Kate Moss and naomi Campbell whose endorsements helped lure in these eager shoppers? Will the glamorous beauties he loves to surround himself with still cavort and be photographed in his company, conferring their approval on him as they fly off to party at his expense around the world?

not on the evidence so far. Moss pointedly kept silent when asked about his behaviour yesterday, while other celebrity pals such as Cara delevingne and Kate Hudson have yet to support him.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s publicist, meanwhile, insists she ‘never had a close association with him’.

of course, we must remember that these allegations against Philip Green are just that — allegations that have not been proven.

But if all these women desert him in their droves, there is one at least he will feel he can turn to — his wife of 30 years, Tina, aka Lady Green, self-appointed Queen of Monaco who has stuck with him through thick and thin. He trusts her to the extent that he has given his entire fortune worth billions to her — admittedly a convenient arrangement which helps avoid tax because she is a resident of the tax haven.

This is a woman who lives a life of unimaginable riches with superyachts, private jets and virtually anything she desires at her disposal.

Has she ever heard or witnessed allegations that he was a predatory bully? and if so, did she ignore them because of her love for the rogue tycoon — or did the inordinate wealth Philip Green bestowed on her encourage her to turn a blind eye?

We may never find out. But now it’s known that he is the subject of these appalling allegations, what can she be feeling other than utter humiliation?

It may be no exaggeration to say she holds his fate in her hands. The question is whether Tina will stand by her man or abandon him — and become the final acrylic nail in his coffin.
