THE VERDICT ON THAT SPOT-KICK

-

GARY NEVILLE

‘It’s not right. It’s not how you would kick a ball in normal play — it goes against everything you’re taught. It’s for show, for theatre. Cristiano Ronaldo used to do it at Old Trafford but it’s not working for Pogba. ‘I’ve never seen a player... not booed on the way up to a penalty but certainly there were groans from the United fans saying, “Just run up and take it!”. And he just kept going and going with that stuttering run-up and it’s building the tension and anxiety.’

PAUL POGBA

‘I always try to destabilize the keeper, maybe they know how I take penalties, maybe I should practise to change it, if the keepers know my step.’

JORDAN PICKFORD

‘I know his little trick which is why I saved it. I went off my line when he was on his final step. I was unfortunate. You have to go a tad early because he has so much power but unfortunately it just bounced back out.’

GRAEME SOUNESS

‘I don’t like to see this. I think it’s a bit “look at me, look at me”. I just don’t get this penalty.’

JOSE MOURINHO

‘Pogba is a better penalty taker than me. He has the courage to take it. I admire players who have the courage to take them. Maybe he has to change his approach (run-up) but I don’t want him to change his mental approach.’
