Doctor waited four hours after racist muggers attacked him
A HOSPITAL consultant yesterday slammed police for allegedly taking four hours to arrive after he was subjected to a race attack.
Walid Deeb, 34, has been signed off work in his trauma unit after badly injuring his knee in the bag-snatch incident.
After fighting off the ten-strong teenage gang, he called police but no help came. He struggled home where an officer took a statement four hours later.
The robbery attempt in Manchester last month is being treated as a hate crime because of the abuse the gang hurled at him.
Mr Deeb said: ‘Where were the police? There is something seriously socially wrong. What if I was older and couldn’t fight them off?
‘I don’t blame the officers – I blame the system. I didn’t see one police car pass by. Anything could have happened.’
Inspector Stephen Griffin of Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Due to the fact police were dealing with several critical incidents at the time, an officer was unable to attend immediately.
‘Officers attended the victim’s home address and established that a group of youths had approached the victim and shouted racial slurs at him. Investigations are ongoing.’
Mr Deeb, who needs surgery on his knee, was on his way to a meeting to discuss Manchester’s homelessness problem at the time.
