NOVEMBER 7, 1942 NO WOMAN may ever again be turned away from a church because she is hatless. For this ruling women have to thank the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr William Temple, and the Archbishop of York, Dr Cyril Garbett. A notice issued over Dr Temple’s signature says: ‘We wish it to be known that no woman or girl should hesitate to enter a church uncovered, nor should any objection to their doing so be raised.’

NOVEMBER 7, 1968 PRESIDENT- ELECT Richard Nixon tonight told the U.S.: ‘My great objective is to bring us together.’ He promised an ‘open’ administra­tion dedicated to unity and closing the racial gap. ‘We want to bridge the generation gap, the gap between the races . . . I am confident that this task is one we can undertake and will be successful.’

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

SU POLLARD, 69. The actress from Nottingham, pictured, said her most lucrative job was on You Rang, M’Lord?, when she earned up to £225,000 a year. Royalty cheques for Hi-DeHi! are less generous — her last was for £ 11.20. She refuses offers to appear on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, saying: ‘I’d rather learn my lines than eat weird animal parts in the jungle.’

RIO FERDINAND, 40. The former Manchester United and England footballer from Peckham won a scholarshi­p to the Central School of Ballet in London at 11, later choosing to focus on football. He had three children with his wife, Rebecca Ellison, who died of cancer in 2015. He recently announced that he is to marry his partner Kate Wright.

BORN ON THIS DAY

BILLY GRAHAM ( 19182018). The U.S. evangelist, who died in February, was nicknamed ‘God’s Ambassador’. He was estimated to have preached to 215 million people in 185 countries. In 1969, a student asked him to pray for ‘good friends and good weed’. Graham told him: ‘You can also get high on Jesus.’

LEON TROTSKY (1879-1940). The Russian, a key figure in the Bolshevik revolution, was killed in Mexico with an ice axe by Ramon Mercader, on Joseph Stalin’s orders. Snowball, the fanatical but naive pig in Orwell’s Animal Farm, was inspired by him. Trotsky had an affair with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. His secretary later married Swallows And Amazons author Arthur Ransome.

IN 1974, nanny Sandra Rivett was murdered in London and her boss, Lord Lucan, vanished. His death certificat­e was issued in 2016.

IN 2016, Canadian singer- songwriter Leonard Cohen died, aged 82.
