Banned? This advert should be must-see TV

-

how can iceland’s Christmas Tv advertisement about the destruction of the rainforest and endangered animals be classed as politically motivated? The supermarket has made a stand by eliminating palm oil from its products in order to save orangutans, tigers, pygmy elephants and sumatran rhinos. how can this be considered to be any more political than the campaigns against plastic pollution in our oceans or documentaries highlighting deforestation caused by logging and mining? Just ask sir David attenborough. BARRY DAVIES, Chorley, Lancs. Thank you for simon Barnes’s article about Borneo’s rainforest and the plight of the orangutans, which has been highlighted by iceland’s daring advert. The thought of this beautiful creature’s extinction is heartbreaking. OLGA CANNAN, Tavistock, Devon. The advert paid for by iceland does not mention the supermarket or its products, but has been banned for its apparent political aspect. iceland seems to have made this advert at its own expense and with no other motive but its wish to see the world become a less cruel place. There was no ulterior financial or commercial motive nor, as far as i’m concerned, any political aim. i fail to see how anyone could not be moved by this eloquent, simple animation. it should be broadcast on Tv, particularly in the season of goodwill. it shows care for those creatures that are unable to defend their right to a home. well done to simon Barnes for keeping this in the forefront of people’s minds. ALAN FITCHETT, Worthing, W. Sussex.
