Why CBD oil is in the news
CBD oil has experienced a surge in popularity in recent months, as it becomes widely available.
Cannabidiol, to give its full name, is an active compound of the hemp flower (pictured right), part of the
cannabis sativa L family. However, CBD oil extracted from hemp has no psychoactive effects and is legal and safe to take, with no risk of addiction.
It is believed CBD Oil acts on elements of our central nervous system and much of the current scientific research focuses on the benefits this nonintoxicating compound can have on our wellbeing. However, health industry regulations mean companies can’t make health claims for CBD oil at present.
But there is plenty of information available online about why this product is selling so well. It is commonly administered by releasing a drop from the tip of a bottle, placed under your tongue. You leave it under your tongue for one to two minutes before swallowing.
This allows the CBD oil to be absorbed effectively. The dose is up to six drops a day, starting with a low dose. Each drop contains about 1.25mg of CBD. The potency of the oil depends on how much CBD it contains and is commonly ( and perhaps confusingly) listed in two different ways: As a percentage and by weight.
For example: 10 per cent CBD means the oil contains 10pc CBD. By weight: 1000mg CBD means there’s 1000mg in the oil, regardless of how much oil is in the bottle. Only trust a brand that is fully compliant with medicines and healthcare products regulations, and uses high potency hemp permitted for use in food supplements.
