FEBRUARY 11, 1941 THE Government wants to buy your car — if it is 20 hp or more, and less than three years old. An appeal was issued by the Ministry of Supply last night asking owners to offer their cars for sale to the Government for a special Army requiremen­t. FEBRUARY 11, 1964 FILM star Peter Sellers, 38, is to marry Swedish actress Britt Ekland, the 21-yearold blonde with the Bardot look. It is a whirlwind romance — after they met at the Dorchester Hotel in London, he proposed after knowing her only two days.

SHERYL CROW, 57. The rock and country singer (right) has sold 50 million albums but is almost more famous for her colourful love life, dating — among others — Eric Clapton and actor Owen Wilson, and she was engaged to cyclist Lance Armstrong before he was exposed as a drug cheat. She now lives in Tennessee with her two adopted sons. DEnnIS SkInnER, 87. The Derbyshire­born politician is nicknamed the ‘Beast of Bolsover’, where he has been Labour MP since 1970. The oldest person in the House of Commons, Skinner, a former coal miner, is known for his annual ritual of heckling during the Queen’s Speech ceremony. In 2006, he shouted: ‘Have you got Helen Mirren on standby?’

BORN ON THIS DAY

EvA GABOR (1919-1995). The Hungarian- born actress and comedian (right) was the younger sister of fellow actresses and socialites Zsa Zsa and Magda. The trio had 20 weddings between them, with Eva notching up five husbands. She was credited with saying: ‘Marriage is too interestin­g an experiment to be tried only once or twice.’ THOMAS EDISOn (1847-1931). The American inventor, the most prolific in history, developed the phonograph and the first commercial­ly viable light bulb. He taught his second wife Morse code so they could communicat­e in secret in front of their family. His last breath is contained in a test tube on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
