How Corbyn vowed to ‘defeat’ the EU

- By Claire Ellicott Political Correspondent

JEREMY Corbyn called for the European Union to be ‘defeated’ in an explosive rally speech, it was revealed last night in previously unseen footage.

The Labour leader lumped the EU in with bankers, describing them as ‘ united in suppressing the economy and creating unemployment’.

In comments which may give an insight into his real views, he told a Left-wing rally in 2010 that he would not be ‘silenced by these people’ but would ‘defeat them’.

It comes after previous footage showed Mr Corbyn condemning the EU as a ‘European empire of the 21st century’ and a ‘military Frankenstein’.

In the new footage unearthed by talkRADIO, he is shown saying: ‘They, the world’s bankers, International Monetary Fund, European Union, they are utterly united in what they want.

‘Utterly united in deflation, suppressing the economy, and creating unemployment. Utterly united in that. We need to be equally united, not just across every union in this country and every community in this country and every social demand in this country, but all across Europe and internationally to show the voice of those campaigning for peace, justice and socialism.

‘We will not be silenced by these people. We will win through. We will defeat them and we will win that decency that we want in this world.’ Mr Corbyn’s remarks made at the Durham Miners’ Gala, a trade union gathering which he attends annually, will infuriate many Labour MPs and members who want to stay in the EU.

A petition urging him to back a second referendum reached 50,000 signatures but Labour MP Angela Smith was turned away from the party’s HQ when she tried to hand it in yesterday afternoon.

Mr Corbyn previously refused to call Miss Smith as she repeatedly attempted to ask him about a second vote during a Brexit debate. His precise views on the EU have long been the subject of speculation, given his past Euro-scepticism.

The earlier footage from 2009 taken during a speech to Irish activists has been seized on by Mr Corbyn’s own MPs as evidence he was always going to ‘facilitate Brexit’.

Obtained by Left-wing website The Red Roar, it shows Mr Corbyn mocking the concept of holding repeated votes on the same issue the year after Ireland rejected the Lisbon Treaty.

A Labour Party spokesman said: ‘Jeremy was speaking out against the austerity that the IMF, the EU and the world’s bankers were forcing on the people of Europe.

‘He is proud of his longstanding record of campaigning for internationalism, social justice and for an investment-led economy.’

Liberal Democrat spokesman Tom Brake said: ‘This is the true Jeremy, spouting absurd conspiracy theories about the EU.

‘If he wants to secure British jobs, stopping Brexit through a People’s Vote is the best way to do it.’
