BLACKBURN...7 NORWICH.......1 PREMIER LEAGUE, OCTOBER 1992

I was a 19-year-old kid playing centre half for Norwich and my defensive partner was Ian Butterworth, who was 28 and my captain. We were hammered. Alan Shearer and Roy Wegerle helped themselves to two each while Tim Sherwood, Stuart Ripley and Gordon Cowans got the others. I’ll be honest, I didn’t cover myself in glory but what stuck in my mind was what happened afterwards. Butterworth spoke to the press and talked about how he told me to keep my head up. It seemed like a case of blame the young ’un! A classic senior pro deflection tactic. That was a good lesson. How did we bounce back? We had such a strange mentality that it didn’t bother us. Norwich were favourites to be relegated that season, then we went on to finish third.
