Should diesels be banned from the roads?

-

THE Government and the Green Party are insisting on getting rid of polluting diesel and petrol cars. But there are no details about how much pollution is created in making the lithium batteries needed to run electric cars. Nor is there any information on how the millions of these batteries will be disposed of, as they are certainly not made from biodegradable materials.

MIKE CATTERALL, Accrington, Lancs. DON’T blame Brexit for Nissan’s lamentable decision to cancel investment in its Sunderland plant. It is down to the announcement that some MPs want to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel powered cars from 2032. No car manufacturer in their right mind would invest if their home market was to be wiped out in only 13 years. Is it any wonder that Britain is facing losing its remaining car manufacturing industry?

L. COTTON, Derby.

IMAGINE a motorway full of electric vehicles stuck in blizzards with their batteries being drained of power. How would they be recharged miles from anywhere?

PETER LONGLEY, Chinnor, Oxon. WHILE Brexit and diesel scaremongering are contributing to the problem of reduced car sales, the main factor is the middle classes, who buy foreign cars for prestige and to flaunt their wealth. The fact they are adding to our huge payments deficit is of no interest to them. Nor are they worried that, as a result of the emissions scandal, fraud and faults, millions of European-built cars have been recalled over the past two years. The Government is equally guilty, as it allows foreign-built vehicles to be bought for the police and NHS.

MICHAEL TINN, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Notts.
