SITCOM RETURNS The Big Bang Theory, 8pm, E4

QUARRELS between couples is the theme as the popular nerd comedy returns, and a lot of that comes out during a paintball session. Meanwhile, Sheldon and Amy ascend to the next level of academic life, thanks to an invitation from university president Siebert (The West Wing’s Joshua Malina).

COMIC BOOK ACTION Agent Carter, 9pm, Paramount

MARVEL’S action drama returns for a second new-to-Freeview series, and our heroine (Hayley Atwell) is in LA. Along with its star, the swish Forties setting is the show’s best asset — the time distance from the other Marvel shows gives the writers real freedom. (Freeview 54, Sky

MOVIE BUFF Mark Kermode’s Oscar Winners: A Secrets of Cinema Special, 9pm, BBC4

IIT’S the Oscars this wweekend, and here, Mark Kermode casts his eye back over winners from the long history of the ceremony. HeH looks for patterns in the types of films that are nominated, such as those with worthy subjects, or celebratio­ns of cinema itself. One of the latter, The Artist, follows (see right).

TROPICAL CHALLENGE Ed Stafford: First Man Out, 9pm, Discovery

ED IS in the jungles of Thailand, putting his survival skills to the test against the bear-like American E.J. Snyder, who has 25 years of military experience to his name. E.J. looks relaxed and even happy as the race begins, delivering lessons in survival to the camera as if he were out on a Sunday stroll.

SATIRICAL COMEDY Flack, 10pm, W

ANNA PAQUIN is the dramatic anchor of this outlandish new drama about a hypercompe­tent American PR, (Paquin, pictured) living in London, who’s numbing a private grief with drugs. Her first case is a married celebrity chef who can’t stop sleeping with people — it’s a compulsion, your honour — and the result is a wickedly enjoyable hour filled with colourful characters.

OSCAR-WINNER The Artist, 10pm, BBC4

THIS modern-day silent film, set in 1927 as the talkies took over, caused a great buzz, raising the internatio­nal profile of its French director (Michel Hazanavici­us) and stars (Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo) — not to mention the terrier Uggie. A beautifull­y nostalgic love letter to cinema.
