Do we need a new political party to challenge the old guard?

-

MY FAMILY and I will be pleased to have a new party to vote for in the next General Election. We are glad Tory MPs are joining the Independent Group because we have become dissatisfied with politicians who think they know more than their voters. It’s good to know some people stand by their beliefs. Y. M. LAcEY, Rye, E. Sussex. THE MPs who have resigned from their parties are demanding a people’s vote on Brexit. But the courage of their convictions prevents them from giving their constituents a vote in a by-election on whether they want an independent MP or one affiliated to a mainstream political party. D. MATTHEWS, Nottingham. NOW that three Remain former Tory MPs have joined eight former Labour MPs, are we to assume anti-Brexit will be the main focus of this new alliance? Chuka Umunna, who has been acknowledged as the group’s leading light,

talked more about Brexit in his post resignation address than anti-Semitism. PAUL LEWIS, Edinburgh. HISTOrY has been cruel to new parties and the defecting MPs will find that, after a whirlwind romance, voters will revert to the traditional two-party system. DAVID FLEMING, Downham Market, Norfolk. I APPLAUD the emergence of a non-tribal party as I am increasingly appalled at the antics of Labour and the Tories. Finally, a sign of fresh political life from the corpse that is Westminster politics. C. roSSINI, Dovercourt, Essex. LUCKY us! We now have two Labour parties: the existing one of loopy Marxists and Mark 2 full of soppy Lefties. J. EVANS, Wokingham, Berks. YOU wait years for a politician who has principles and 11 turn up at once! Hopefully, the Independent group marks the start of a new party with no baggage. CrAIG VIDLEr, Ashford, Kent. AT LAST, something to inspire me politically. With a leader who is a throwback to classwar politics, I can no longer vote for the Labour Party I’ve supported for 50 years. Neither could I see myself betraying my origins to vote Conservative. The centre ground is where I belong. I hope moderate MPs from all parties join the Independent Group to forge a new middle way in British politics. LYNDoN HErrING, Ashbourne, Derbys.
