EFL IN CRISIS AS JEVANS QUITS

-

THE leadership chaos at the EFL is set to escalate with interim chair Debbie Jevans announcing she will not stand for the permanent role, possibly leading to her immediate departure. Only weeks after it was revealed Shaun Harvey would be standing down as chief executive in May, Jevans is yet another casualty of the bitter dispute between the Championship clubs and the EFL over the broadcasting rights deal with Sky. Jevans was appointed in temporary charge last September after the departure of Ian Lenagan. But Jevans, a key figure in the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics before a difficult term as CEO of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, has had little success. An EFL board meeting that started in Preston on Wednesday was scheduled to conclude that night but continued into a second day. The clubs are demanding a complete overhaul of the EFL’s leadership structure, with calls for a new board and more influence for the clubs. In fact, they want a say in the appointment of the new chief executive and the new chair. MATT LAWTON ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate has a tough decision to make as the Democratic Republic of Congo make overtures to emerging Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 21. Southgate names a squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro on Wednesday, but with Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier all available, he has plenty of choice in Wan-Bissaka’s position.

CLAUDIO RANIERI is poised to make a swift return as caretaker manager of Roma. Ranieri, 67 and a Roma fan, was fired by Fulham last week. He is set to take over from the sacked Eusebio Di Francesco.

MICK McCARTHY has included Newport’s Padraig Amond and Luton’s James Collins in his 38-man Republic of Ireland squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia.
