Roaring crowds

-

ALMOST any live programme on TV is precipitated by loud whooping, yelling and cheering, obviously with the hope that the sound of manufactured hilarity and jollity will attract viewers to the screen.

I cannot be absolutely sure, but I think it began with Strictly Come Dancing. The incessant whoo-whoo-whooping became such a cacophony of noise which detracted from the entertainment of the show, that I stopped watching.

The latest programme to suffer from this is the once fine show The One Show.

Now it introduces itself with an audience that yells and cheers throughout the programme, sounding like a bunch of lunatics that have just escaped from the asylum. It has become sheer bedlam! I no longer watch it.

My partner Shirley used to enjoy Loose Women, when it opened with four ladies sitting behind a large desk. Now they all enter individually like gladiators entering the arena, as the audience goes wild with hysteria! how can you be whooping when you haven’t heard a word of the show?

All this inflated noise is nothing more than a fake and pretentious method of giving the impression that this is a programme not to be missed.

It’s time to revert to deserved applause that actually merits entertainment. Michael Brooks,
