A striking blunder

-

DO the Brexiteer ‘ultras’ know that once deep in a hole, it’s wise to stop digging?

Raging at Theresa May for ‘ subcontracting’ the Brexit process to Jeremy Corbyn, the European Research Group has hit upon another wheeze: go on strike.

If the Prime Minister agrees with the Marxist zealot (who, we accept, is singularly unfit to be near power) to water down her deal to include a customs union, they threaten to paralyse the Government by voting against all its legislation. How dare she conspire with him? they ask.

If they really can’t understand, let us explain. Three times Mrs May put her deal, which regained supremacy of our money, borders and laws, to the Commons.

Three times the myopic ERG ‘Spartans’ – infatuated with ideological purity – rejected it. If they had just swallowed their pride, we would be out of the EU. But they left her nowhere else to turn, and now they are paying a terrible price.

For good measure, if they do go on strike, what on Earth do they think might happen? The Government could collapse, voters would punish the Tories, and Mr Corbyn – and his chilling Socialist vision – would enter Downing Street and wreck the country. Talk about sleeping with the enemy! ÷WITH

unabashed temerity, disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya helped Remain insurgents pull off a Commons coup on Wednesday to rule out No Deal by just one vote. As bold as brass, the ex-Labour whip – fresh from prison and wearing an electronic tag – hammered another nail into Brexit’s coffin by trooping through the ‘Aye’ lobby. Across the room, shamed Tory backbencher Christopher Davies – facing jail for a £700 expenses fraud – was voting ‘No’. Could there be a more apt metaphor for our broken Parliament?
