British woman soldier, 19, ‘slashed her colleague’s throat with glass’ in Magaluf
A BRITISH woman soldier was left fighting for her life after allegedly being attacked with a glass by a friend at a Spanish nightspot.
Sydney Cole, 19, also a servicewoman, was said to have slashed her colleague Sarah Ann Garrity, 22, in the neck during a night out in Magaluf, Majorca.
The alleged attack took place at about 1am at Banana’s, a well-known club on the popular Magaluf strip. The friends were off-duty and believed to be on holiday in the lively resort.
Miss Garrity was understood to be in a ‘critical’ condition in a hospital in the capital Palma yesterday.
Her teenage friend was reportedly remanded by a court yesterday on suspicion of attempted homicide.
One local report said Cole had claimed in court Miss Garrity punched her in the face during a fight and she injured her by accident after parts of a glass she threw on the floor hit her in the neck. However, local paper Diario de Mallorca claimed witnesses had told investigators that Cole had thrown a glass directly at her friend’s head. Cole, in blue jean shorts, said nothing as she was escorted in handcuffs into a court in Palma yesterday. A British Army spokesman said: ‘We are aware of an incident involving two off-duty soldiers in Spain. An investigation by Spanish police is ongoing.’
Miss Garrity, who suffered serious blood loss, is thought to be Scottishborn and living in Middlesbrough.
A source said: ‘The girl who was injured suffered a cut to her throat. She’s still very serious but we’re hearing the operation was successful and saved her life.’
