Holiday? It’s more like a war zone... Ex-soldier and wife stranded in Corfu ‘hell-hole’

- By Izzy Ferris

A SHOCKeD former soldier and his wife have compared their ‘ hell- hole’ holiday resort to a war zone after finding it strewn with rubbish and building waste.

Mick and Jayney Clark, who are stranded at the resort, say they cannot wait to leave Agios gordios on Corfu.

The couple paid nearly £1,000 for the all-inclusive break with TUI after spotting a Facebook post advertising the trip which looked ‘too good to be true’. After arriving last Friday, they shared photos of the beach and surrounding area overflowing with rubbish. Their hotel had no running water.

Mr Clark said the resort resembled war-torn Bosnia – where he served during the 1990s war.

The couple complained that many buildings were derelict or half-built and rubbish was piled high on pavements. The beach was also littered with dog mess

Mrs Clark, 50, from Cranbrook in Devon, said: “We are stuck in this hell-hole and we can’t get home.

‘Mick said this place resembles Bosnia in 1994. They might as well have sent us self-catering to Beirut. I’m not kidding, that’s what it looks like – they might as well have packed us off to libya or Syria.’

The couple spotted the £499 per person break in a Facebook post by Hays Travel. Mrs Clark said: ‘Our first thought was “It’s too good to be true” so we went into Hays Travel in Topsham and asked “What’s the catch? Why is it so cheap?”

‘We were told, “It’s the first week of their season and they are trying to encourage people to come”.’ When they arrived the only signs of life were builders preparing shops and hotels for when the season gets fully under way in two weeks. Mrs Clark said: ‘We went for a walk to see what we thought would be a nice, quiet fishing village – it’s a ghost town. Nothing’s open. We’ve got building sites, dereliction and overflowing bins.’ The couple asked to move to another rep car to could visit resort only nicer offer but parts them their of Corfu. a holiday rental Mrs Clark said Agios gordios, on the island’s west coast, is nothing like the glossy pictures shown by the travel agent. She insisted: ‘I’m not the sort of person who moans about stuff. I just want to go home and warn others. I don’t want apologies – I want to get out of this place. It is making me ill.’ She added: ‘Other guests are paying £200 each to get a flight home. That’s how bad this place is. This holiday was supposed to help end a really bad time in our lives. I was really ill last year. The stress and upset of this has caused my symptoms to flare up today. No one can help. It’s disgusting.’ A TUI spokesman said: ‘We’re sorry to hear about Mr and Mrs Clark’s experience. We are investigating and will be in contact very soon to resolve the matter.’
