Killing Eve stars slay Bodyguard at the Bafta awards

- By Susie Coen and Dominique Hines

THERE could be only one winner. And last night Killing Eve beat Bodyguard at the TV Baftas, taking three awards.

The BBC thriller about a psychopathic female assassin has won millions of fans. It was named best drama series and star Jodie Comer pipped Bodyguard’s Keeley Hawes to win the award for best actress. Miss Comer, 26, who plays the ruthless Villanelle, looked glamorous in a pink asymmetric Stella McCartney dress. She beat co-star Sandra Oh to the award and was in tears as she made her acceptance speech. ‘Thank you so much,’ she said. ‘Sorry I’m the only one who’s turned on the waterworks.’ Fiona Shaw, who plays MI6 boss Carolyn Martens in the series, was named best supporting actress. She praised writer Phoebe Waller- Bridge’s ‘glass- shattering genius and wayward imagination’. In turn, Miss Waller-Bridge, 33, thanked her ‘charismatic, breathtaking, energetic team’ as she accepted the best drama award at the Royal Festival Hall in London, adding: ‘I can’t speak, it’s so unbelievably exciting.’ Miss Hawes, 43 who looked stunning in an off off-the- the shoulder gown and red lipstick, had been nominated for two awards – best actress for her portrayal of Home Secretary Julia Montague in Bodyguard and best supporting actress for playing Dorothy Wick in Mrs Wilson, both BBC productions.

She lost out in both categories, but Bodyguard did win the only Bafta award voted for by viewers – Virgin Media’s must- see moment. It claimed the prize for the death of Julia Montague in an explosion.

Turning heads on the red carpet was newly single breakfast TV host Susanna Reid, 48, in a black dress with a revealing mesh top.
