RALPH DEMANDS KILLER INSTINCT

- KIERAN GILL

THE underdogs may not have got a result on the south coast at the top of the table in Brighton, but they did at the bottom in Southampton. Championship-bound Huddersfield said farewell to the Premier League by coming from behind to avoid what would have been a record-equalling 29th loss of the season, thus ending a dismal campaign on the slightest of highs. For Southampton, it left manager Ralph Hasenhuttl concerned about his side’s lack of ‘winning mentality’. The Saints have dropped 29 points from leading positions in 2018-19. Were you to add that to their final tally of 39, they would be sixth, above Manchester United. ‘Next season we have to change,’ Hasenhuttl said. ‘It is a clear picture for me, very clear what we are still missing. We have to sign a few new players. New spirit, new mentality.’ Southampton, who were below Huddersfield when Hasenhuttl (right) arrived to replace the sacked Mark Hughes, took the lead here through Nathan Redmond. The winger cut in on to his right foot and his shot curled into the top corner from 25 yards. Huddersfield looked set for a 29th defeat which would have equalled the Premier League record shared by Ipswich, Sunderland and Derby. Yet they got their equaliser courtesy of an error by Angus Gunn in the 55th minute. The Saints goalkeeper dallied on the ball, Alex Pritchard pinched it and scored into the empty net. As a thank you to supporters from the Huddersfield hierarchy, hanging on the back of each seat in the away end was a free replica shirt. Town boss Jan Siewert described the fans as their ‘petrol’ and added on the summer’s transfer business: ‘We are all ambitious but important for me first is to have a stable spine.’ After two years of competing with the elite, Huddersfield’s Premier League stay is over.
