Lush! Gavin & Stacey are coming back for Xmas

- By Susie Coen TV and Radio Reporter

AT nine years, it has been more than a pregnant pause since the final series of Gavin & Stacey.

Now fans left on tenterhooks as the couple found out they were expecting their first child, and as Smithy and Nessa finally seemed to have got together, will be able to find out what’s been occurring.

The award-winning comedy is to return for a one-off hour-long Christmas special on BBC1, co-writer James Corden announced yesterday.

Sharing a picture of the script for the show on Instagram, Corden wrote: ‘Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while... We’re excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day.’

He and Miss Jones will be joined by other regulars Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Melanie Walters. The show ran for three series, telling the story of Gavin and Stacey, who fall in love and get married after speaking on the phone to each other every day for work.

The programme is set in Barry, South Wales – where Stacey is from – and Billericay, Essex, where Gavin grew up. The 2010 New Year’s Day finale drew 10.2million viewers.

Corden and Miss Jones said the Christmas Day special will look at the characters a decade on.

‘Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like,’ they said. ‘So, in secret, we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again, and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.’

Miss Page, 41, wrote on Instagram: ‘It’s happening!!! I’m so excited! Can’t wait to get on the slots down Barry again!!’

Horne, 40, shared a joke about how each of the show’s characters would have voted in the EU Referendum, along with a Santa Claus emoji.

Since Gavin & Stacey ended, Corden, 40, has become a star in the US, where he hosts The Late Late Show on CBS.

The actor, who has 5.1million Instagram followers, has became famous for his Carpool Karaoke segments in which he drives around singing along to hits with pop stars such as Adele, Madonna and Sir Paul McCartney.
