Of the Tory candidates, who should be the next Prime Minister?

-

BORIS JOHNSON has been criticised for being arrogant, but that has been the characteristic of all good prime ministers: Palmerston, Disraeli, Churchill, Wilson and Thatcher. God help us if we end up with another weak leader begging Parliament for support.

TONY TRuLuCK, Waterlooville, Hants. tHE people’s choice is Boris Johnson, but many MPs are determined to prevent him being one of the last two candidates that tory members will vote on, because they don’t like him or fear he may bring about a no-deal Brexit.

C. RuSSeLL, Droitwich, Worcs.

JEREMY HUNT states that the fact he was once an entrepreneur and dealmaker makes him the best candidate. How many deals did he do after stating he wouldn’t just walk away and say goodbye? I wish I’d done business with him!

ALAN HARVeY, Yarm, N. Yorks. tHE next prime minister

needs to be a Brexiteer, single-minded, reform foreign aid, reassess student fees and sort out Universal Credit. They also need to look professional on the world stage and be media-savvy. That person is Esther McVey.

GERRY DOYLE, Liverpool.

I CAN think of no one more admired or better suited to be prime minister than Ruth Davidson. Give her the job and we can all get on with it.

ANGUS MARTIN, South Croydon, Surrey. THE reason the Conservative Party haemorrhaged votes in the EU elections was because MPs failed to listen to their constituents. They can show they have learned a lesson by taking instruction from their constituency association members on who to support. It should not be up to just 313 Tory MPs.

DAVID PARkER, Leyland, Lancs.

THE Conservatives have 124,000 members — fewer than the Mormons in Britain. Yet those people, not even 0.002 per cent of the population and highly unrepresentative not least because many of them are retired, will control what will happen to the country by electing the next prime minister.

C. CLAYTON, Waverton, Cheshire. THERE are enough Tory candidates to form a football team. The problem is they don’t know who has to score the goals and who has to save them.

BRIAN BEST, High Wycombe, Bucks.

INSTEAD of jostling for position to be the next PM, Tory MPs should quietly decide on their new leader. Squabbling and jostling for position will only frustrate and infuriate the public. The obvious choice is Boris Johnson — a strong character to motivate, give hope and stability.

ROY MARTIN, Maidstone, kent. THE Tory leadership race looks like a rerun of Monty Python’s Flying Circus Upper Class Twit of the Year. PAUL SEAGER, Ipswich, Suffolk.
