How over-75s reacted with fury to the licence fee news

-

PENSIONERS and other BBC viewers vented their spleen at the news last night – saying that the TV was their only way of keeping in touch with the outside world. Here are some of their comments online: Evelyn, 98, from Woking, Surrey, said: ‘Both my children work, so I am on my own all day. I have very poor balance thus cannot walk, so the TV is company for me. My hearing is poor so I cannot rely upon the radio. The combination of pictures and sound keep me in touch with what is going on in the world. I would probably have to say no to a TV licence.’ Widow Val, 81, from Kent, said: ‘I’m disgusted, to say the least, as the BBC programming is so much repeats that I rarely watch the BBC channels, but I will still have to pay for licence. I live in flats with neighbours of a similar age, and many residents are unable to go out, so TV is a lifeline.’ Patricia Price said: ‘Think about all the really elderly folk living alone who rely on TV for company. Where are they supposed to find the licence fee, go without food and heating?’ Wendy Wright, from Northamptonshire, was worried about the impact the cost will have on her 85-year-old housebound mother. She said: ‘The TV is her only companion and way of keeping in touch with the outside world. For her to pay for a TV licence – when at least 60 per cent of what is on offer is of no relevance to her – will be shameful.’ James Underwood, 81, from Wiltshire, said: ‘This charge will only just be covered by the increase in my statutory state pension. I do feel that the Government has welshed on the original deal.’ Julie Williams said: ‘Utterly disgusting and controversial. The BBC paid out ridiculous £1million salaries. Pensioners should boycott this decision and buy a setbox.’ Sally Thomas said: ‘Everyone should cancel their direct debits in protest. They can’t prosecute us all. Instead of charging the elderly, knock a couple of zeros off top earners’ salaries.’
