Trump’s new attack on Mayor

- By Chief Crime Correspondent

DONALD Trump has reignited his war of words with the Mayor of London, describing Sadiq Khan as a ‘national disgrace’ after the latest killings in the capital.

The US President tweeted on Saturday: ‘London needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster – will only get worse!’

His post included comments by Rightwing pundit Katie Hopkins, who called the capital ‘ Stab-City’ and ‘ Khan’s Londonistan’ in her own tweet, alongside screenshots of articles describing the violence.

Mr Trump added: ‘ He is a national disgrace who is destroying the City of London!’

However, Mr Khan refused to retaliate – despite having done so during the recent state visit by Mr Trump, when the two traded blows on social media.

The mayor’s spokesman said Mr Khan was ‘not going to waste his time’ responding to the president’s tweet.

The mayor said he was ‘sickened’ by the three deaths, adding: ‘ Our overstretched police are working around the clock to keep Londoners safe. They need our support to end this scourge of violence.’

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was ‘absolutely awful’ that Mr Trump was ‘using the tragedy of people being murdered to attack the mayor’.

Figures last month revealed that five young people are attacked with a knife every day in London, and Mr Khan has warned it could take a decade to turn back the tide of violent crime.

Mr Trump has repeatedly used Twitter to attack London’s first Muslim mayor.

The president began his state visit to Britain this month by tweeting that Mr Khan had ‘done a terrible job’, branding him ‘a stone cold loser’. The mayor hit back that the President’s conduct was ‘the sort of thing an 11-year-old would do’.

The feud began in 2016 when the mayor said Mr Trump’s proposed Muslim immigration ban was ‘outrageous’.

Last year, Mr Trump claimed the mayor had ‘done a very bad job on terrorism’.
