Silverstone switch dealt Brexit blow

-

A no-dEAl Brexit truly is the gift that keeps on giving. It now transpires it is the main obstacle to the British Grand Prix finding a new home in the calendar. lewis hamilton led the calls for an alternate date, having seen his historic sixth Silverstone victory bumped from the bulletins by England’s cricket World cup win and the epic Wimbledon final between novak djokovic and Roger Federer. next year could be as bad, with the Grand Prix scheduled to clash with the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. Ideally, the Grand Prix could be moved to coincide with the first weekend of Wimbledon — the Sunday of which is only used if the tournament has lost significant time to rain. This, however, could mean the British Grand Prix going back to back with other races in Europe — and F1 has been warned about severe border delays, short term at least, in the event of no deal. Silverstone’s owners received a government briefing stating that inbound heavy-goods vehicles would be kept waiting three to four days for the first six or 12 months if Britain was without a deal. ‘I agree back-to-back races in Europe would introduce risk that is not acceptable,’ admitted Stuart Pringle, chief executive of the British Racing drivers’ club, who own Silverstone. ‘It is unlikely an F1 paddock could be set up in a week in that scenario.’ And this is a minor, quite trivial Brexit complication really. So just imagine the consequences of the major ones.
