- By Jake Hurfurt

POLICE have begun a murder inquiry after an 89-year-old woman was found dead in her home.

Officers said the pensioner had been assaulted in what may have been a burglary. The attackers broke into the property in Waltheof Gardens, Tottenham, north London, during Saturday evening or yesterday morning.

Officers were alerted by ambulance staff at around 10.45am yesterday after the body was found.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and a post- mortem examination will be carried out. There have been no arrests.

Detective Chief Inspector Garry Moncrieff, of the Metropolitan Police Specialist Crime Directorate, said last night: ‘The woman had clearly been assaulted and, as such, a murder investigation has been launched. I want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in and around Waltheof Gardens and the surrounding area on Saturday night or Sunday morning.’
