Moores in frame for South Africa

- By LAWRENCE BOOTH

TWO-TIME former England coach Peter Moores has emerged as a leading candidate for the South Africa job after Ottis Gibson was sacked following a disappointing World Cup. Moores’s three-year contract at Nottinghamshire runs out at the end of the summer, with the South Africans looking to replace Gibson some time next month, when his own contract is set to expire. The 56-year-old Moores (above) had two spells in charge of England, with mixed success. In January 2009, less than two years after he succeeded Duncan Fletcher, he lost the job after a fallout with Kevin Pietersen, who was sacked as captain. Moores was reappointed in April 2014 after Andy Flower paid the price for a 5-0 Ashes whitewash, but this time he lasted barely a year, a spell that included England’s disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign. In all, England won four and lost five of their 10 Test series under Moores, whose hands-on approach worked better with some players than others. Gibson, who left his role as England bowling coach two years ago, has declared an interest in replacing Trevor Bayliss as England head coach. Bayliss will leave after the Ashes.
